Jerry Smith serves as the
Director of Munitions with Global Technical Systems (GTS) where he is
responsible for the strategic growth and technical vision of a rapidly growing,
successful lethal effects / munitions division, headquartered in Huntsville,
Alabama. Jerry’s team provides valuable
engineering services and force multiplication for various government and prime
customers.
Jerry has over 25 years of munitions design,
development, test & evaluation / qualification, fabrication and fielding
experience. Throughout his career, he has been an innovator and a creator.
Jerry played a significant role in notable munition development and game
changing programs; such as, the GBU-43/B
Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), the GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator
(MOP) tail kit and principal designer of the BLU-137/B advanced 2,000-lb
penetrator warhead. Jerry provided design oversight & mentoring for the
GBU-69/B Small Glide Munition (SGM) development effort. He is listed as an inventor
on the patent and principal investigator of the Arming Generator Relocator
Adaptor (AGRA) fuze arming system as well as other special programs of record.
In addition to Jerry’s munitions expertise, he
has extensive experience in wind tunnel model design and fabrication. He is
experienced in the test, evaluation, and qualification of weapons systems –
both at systems level and discreet component qualification efforts, with
post-test forensics being a specialty. Jerry and his engineering team have also
established a robust modeling & simulation capability in the area of
penetration mechanics, survivability and lethality.
Having spent several years working special
programs for the intelligence community in the areas of Foreign Materials
Exploitation (FME), Jerry is well versed in establishing & executing
hardware mensuration and characterization programs.
His extensive commitment to advancing defense
munitions technology has earned him the reputation as a munition technology
leader and a game changer in the industry.
Jerry is trained and experienced in Special
Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) operations for law enforcement, leveraging his
munitions experience with a specialty in explosive breaching and porting. Jerry
has multiple certificates from advanced level explosive breaching courses. He
has been assigned to SWAT duties since 2011 and is a 12+ year active member of
a very busy, local sheriff’s office SWAT team, volunteering his time as an
experienced reserve SWAT deputy.
In his spare time, Jerry
currently teaches at Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat (SFAUC) courses, as
well as special forces Master Breaching courses where he educates warfighters
about the effects of blast-overpressure on the body, and how to mitigate those
effects.
